Weekend Update

Hi, friends!

I hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend. What are you reading right now? Any book recommendations to share?

I’ve been tearing my way through The Pearl That Broke Its Shell, by Nadia Hashimi, and I’m really enjoying it. I hope to have a full review up soon! I’m just now learning that this was Hashimi’s debut novel, so I’m doubly impressed. She’s published several other novels since this one, and I definitely want to check some of those out once I get through a bit more of my TBR.

The Pearl That Broke Its Shell is about a young girl named Rahima in modern-day Afghanistan. It also flashes back in time to Rahima’s great-great-grandmother, Shekiba. Both women, while separated by many years, are connected by blood and their shared struggles in relation to gender, destiny, and family.

My self control broke down this weekend and I purchased some new books, pictured below, while my Wendy cat stares on in judgement.

Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward, and Tin Man by Sarah Winman

These books are two of the four which are up for vote for my book club’s August selection. So hopefully one of them wins or I’ll be stuck buying another book. I couldn’t resist these, though. I’ve seen so many lovely reviews online. Roxane Gay recently posted a positive review for Sing, Unburied, Sing on GoodReads, and that decided things for me.

That’s all for now! I’ve been working through several rather long books at once, so I thought I’d pop in to say quick hello, as it may be a little bit before I can get another review posted.

Happy reading, everyone!
